Goshin, Protector of the Spirit

Last week, I and a number of other people had the distinct privilege and honor of doing some routine maintenance on John Y. Naka’s amazing forest planting called “Goshin, Protector of the Spirit” (Juniperus Chinensis ’Foemina’). We  plucked out yellowing, brown and dead needles, removed dead branches, took off wire that was starting to damage the bark, rewired it where necessary, and finally we preserved the deadwood to ensure that it does not one day start to rot. It is a very special thing to get to work on such a unique group of trees, but more than that, it is very exciting to be a part of a lineage of caretakers, all who share the same passion and love for this forest as the last person. This tree was a gift of John Y. Naka in 1984, and has been in training since 1948).
