Japanese Hemlock

This Japanese Hemlock Tree (Tsuga diversifolia) needs a little routine pruning to maintain its many different foliage pads. While other trees in the collection have been pruned several times by now, this is the first of the season for this Hemlock. Long and leggy growth must be cut back, as well as an inspection of the wiring job, to make sure that the copper is not damaging the bark. This tree was a gift of the Royal Household of Chichibu, Japan, and has been in training since 1926.
