Ponderosa Pine

Recently I had the opportunity to assist head Curator Jack Sustic on some basic maintenance and restyling of this massive Ponderosa Pine tree (Pinus Ponderosa). We removed some old copper wire that was being used to position small branches, and pulled some of the larger primary branches in closer to the trunk. I was amazed to learn how maluable the branches of this tree are, as they easily contorted to the positions our hands encouraged them towards. This tree was a gift of the U.S. Forest Service in the year 1980, and it has been in training since 1966.
